World Whale Day of Maui (since 1980)

World Whale Day goes back to an initiative by animal rights activists on Maui in 1980, who founded the Maui Whale Festival in honor of the humpback whales that stay there in February. Whale Day is not just about the humpback whales in Hawaii. In fact, whales live in all of the world's oceans and suffer everywhere from the consequences of the climate crisis and marine pollution.
